Painting Unit
Emily Hartley-Skudder

ArtBox, Christchurch, 9 May – 2 June 2013

After discovering that Year 9 art students at Burnside High School were using her as an 'artist model' Emily Hartley-Skudder invited the students to exhibit their works in temporary gallery space ArtBox in Christchurch. While she was influenced by Heather Straka's exhibition The Asian (2009-11), she ultimately departed from this when she chose to remove her own painting from view. As a painter of miniature still life, Hartley-Skudder is known for her innovative exhibition practice, and unique way of challenging her medium and subject.
